General Questions

Q: Do I have to fill out a site survey form for every branch/site of my organization?

A: A site survey is only required to sites that will have a direct, physical connection to the Kan-ed network. If you plan to connect one site directly to Kan-ed 2.0 and then connect additional sites through your LAN or WAN, then only one site survey should be completed.

Section 1: Contact Information

Q: Why are my organization's hours of operation needed?

A:This information is requested to give Kan-ed and the Network Operations Center (NOC) staff a general idea of operating hours for on-going support.

Q: Seven different points of contact are requested. What if my organization does not have enough staff to have separate points of contacts for each area requested?

A: The purpose of the points of contact is to ensure that Network Operations Center (NOC) staff have accurate contact information related to any issue that might arise related to your organization's connection to Kan-ed 2.0 in order to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. The primary goal is to have a contact listed for each area that has the necessary authority and knowledge to make final decisions related to that area. For many organizations, the same person may fill multiple points of contact.

Section 2: Organization Profile Selection

Q: How do I select which profile will best fit the needs of my organization?

A: Your technical support person should be able to help you select a profile. Also see the technical faq here. If still unsure, please email Charmine Chambers at cchambers@ksbor.org.

Section 3: Wide Area Network Requirements

Q: The provider that I would like to use to connect to Kan-ed 2.0 is not listed in the survey, what do I do?

A: Only those providers and peered-networks listed in the site survey are able to connect organizations to Kan-ed 2.0. If the provider you would like to use does not chose to become a Kan-ed authorized provider (KAP), then you must select one of the providers listed in the site survey.

Q: What is border router management?

A: Please contact your technical support person for more information

Q: What is an IPSec tunnel?

A: Please contact your technical support person for more information

Section 4: Local Area Network Information

Q: What is a stateful firewall?

A: Please contact your technical support person for more information

Q: What is a demarc?

A: A "demarc" refers to the point of demarcation. The term is traditionally used when referring to the location where the telephone company hands the circuit to the customer. Sites on the Kan-ed 2.0 network will have two (2) demarc points: 1) where the telco delivers the T1s, T3, or Ethernet to your site and another where your site LAN plugs into the Juniper J-Series router.

Q: What is a demarc extension?

A: A demarc extension refers to the process of installing additional wiring so that site routing hardware can be located somewhere other than the telco demarc. For example: If the telco demarc is located in the basement of your building but your network core is located on the 2nd floor, a demarc extension is generally installed so that routing hardware may be located near other network infrastructure.

Generally speaking, extending demarc wiring is performed by the telco. If your site needs a demarc extension, please be sure to indicate this need on the Kan-ed 2.0 site questionnaire.

Section 5: Real-Time Video Setup
